Nate did about ten laps, freestyle and in unhurried fashion, back and forth. His outward lethargy camouflaged his inner turmoil. What was the matter with him that he couldn’t control himself around this woman? Where was his reserve when he was with her, his cool indifference, his notorious control? Only God knew. For sure, he did not. With a teasing look, a taunting pout, and a come-hither smile, all his high intentions of maintaining distance demolished, of keeping his emotions in check hightailed it out of Dodge. Was this just lust, simply desire, only a sexual need? He sighed, knowing that it wasn’t even as he thought it. He paused in his swim and looked towards the object of his interest and smiled. Ms. Stacy Williams liked food. She’d secured a plate and was busy spooning the cocktail patties, mini sandwiches, crackers, cornbread and cake unto her plate. Watching her stirred his hunger, thankfully this time it was for physical sustenance. He struck out for the steps, ready to eat.

She didn’t look up even when he stood close by her and toweled himself dry vigorously. She was focused—too focused—on her food. Nate didn’t want to believe it but it looked as if Ms. Stacy Williams had gone shy on him. The very idea was laughable. He just managed to muffle mirth at the mere thought. He decided to engage her. “Looks like the food is good,” he observed.

She glanced up then, her brows creasing a fraction. She muzzled her mouth with her hand and broke her rule by talking with her mouth full, “It’s great, but didn’t you make it?”

Nate shook his head. His mother had, and he told her so.

“Ready to eat?”

"Yes, please.”

Stacy got him a plate and started putting a bit of everything on it.

The plate she set before him was 'man' sized in fullness. Nate prayed and dug in.

They ate in silence for a time, each enjoying the al fresco food. Fresh fruit, sandwiches, cornbread and pastries with a gallon of tasty tangy lemonade. You can't beat that, Stacy decided, popping the last piece of patty into her mouth. Reaching for a napkin, she dabbed her lips and glanced at Nate. He was a slow eater, meticulous chewer, savoring the taste to the tiniest drop. He ate pretty much like he kissed, with languorous enjoyment. Stop! Stacy berated herself in her head. She should not be thinking about Nate and kissing at the same time. The day was only warm. She was hot. So it was not the weather. A little conversation could help curb her wayward thoughts. She launched into speech.

"You know when I first met you I thought you were just a cantankerous cretin."

Nate swallowed and smiled at the unflattering remark. "And now?"

"Now I think you're just cantankerous but not a cretin," she answered cheekily.

He laughed, a low sound that tiptoed softly across Stacy's emotions like the caress of a pianist across the keys of his instrument. "I'll be more generous than you. You're irritating, true, yet I've never met a woman as insightful, incredibly intuitive, and as sensitive as you.
